Pursu.it Playbook

Telling Your Story

Your Campaign Title

The title should be simple, descriptive, and memorable.

This is where you can really stand out and offer a strong first impression. Your image will be what your fans see first, so choose a high resolution photo that looks professional.

Your bio should be concise and powerful. Show your fans what you have done, and why you have what it takes to reach your Pursu.it campaign target. Include some career highlights, what motivates you, and outline why you’re passionate about what you are doing.

Keys to Telling Your Story
  • It has to be authentic – spoken in your words – not someone else’s.
  • Be human and make it personal.
  • Reveal something about yourself (one of the reasons bloopers or out-takes work so well is that they have that authenticity).
  • Specific is better than general – all athletes have goals, hopes, and dreams, so give us a reason to care about yours.
  • Two things need to happen in your story – we need to make an emotional connection with you, the athlete, and your story, and we need to understand why you need additional resources.

One speaks to the heart; the other, to the head – and pocketbook.

Two Stories to Include in Your Video:

  1. Specific memories: When you, the athlete, first started in the sport, or the moment you knew you wanted to go to the Olympics.
  2. Some hardships endured: Revealing when things weren’t going so well.

Reach into yourself to find a story that people can relate to - something that happened to you and why it was memorable. Be specific. Paint a picture – pull us into your world.

Here are a few examples you might be able to paint a picture about:

  • Winning for the very first time
  • A moment when you had to pick yourself up and keep on going after a disappointment
  • Facing a hardship
  • A moment in your training day that makes you feel amazing about what you're doing
  • The first time you tried your sport of choice
  • Seeing a hero and a moment you wanted to emulate
  • An incident that reveals what’s so hard about you being an amateur athlete, juggling work, paying the bills
  • A moment that reveals how you eat, breathe, sleep your sport
  • A time when you got the help you needed – from a coach, a member of your family – and what it meant
  • A time when you put it all on the line – or didn’t

  • Who you are
  • Your personality
  • What sport you are in
  • Your Pursu.it goal and budget
  • What the money means to you
  • Your givebacks
  • A giant thank-you

Defining Your Goal

You have to be able to clearly define your goal.

It is critical to the success of your Pursu.it campaign that you define what you are trying to achieve (travel, equipment purchase, competition etc.), what the costs will be, and why you need to accomplish it. Including specific dates as well as budgets help illustrate to potential supporters why you need the support, and that your Pursu.it campaign targets match your sport-related needs.

With a goal that is clearly defined, expectations are transparent for both the athlete and potential fans. This gives potential supporters the ability to assess the value of their donations and ultimately increases their likelihood to give. It is important that you have taken the time to understand the scale and cost of your Pursu.it campaign goal and that you can communicate it clearly. This transparency is key to the ongoing success of the platform.

How much to ask for

You have to know exactly how much money you need and why you need it. Like a business, you develop a budget and understand your costs. Your fans will respect this effort and will be more keen to support your Pursu.it campaign.

Some important questions to ask yourself are:

  • Do you have a real understanding of your costs?
  • Have you factored in the cost of your givebacks?
  • Have you factored in the transaction costs?
  • Will you have to buy stamps?
  • Will there be shipping?

Pursu.it charges a 12% fee on the total funds raised plus 2.9% + $0.30/pledge for payment processing.

Your formula should be:

Money you need + campaign costs = your ask.

Producing your Video

Your video will tell your story and is what will inspire your fans. A great video is the key to the success of your Pursu.it.

We encourage you to source your networks for a friend/colleague who not only knows how to create a video, and really loves the idea of helping you with your Pursu.it campaign.

You will need a computer, some pictures of your story, footage of you training and competing, and most importantly, you will need passion and enthusiasm.

Keys to Recording a Great Video
  • You will want to record your voice to edit into your video. To get the best possible results, you should record in a quiet place, somewhere that you have access to at more than one time in case you have to make some edits.
  • You can write out what you want to say, but you need to practice it so it does not sound forced.

If you are going to film yourself on video, and we highly recommend you do that, there are a couple of things you should try to do:

  • Make sure your background is not cluttered. You might want to shoot in your bedroom, but pictures of Justin Beiber are going to test the concentration of your viewer. They should be looking at you.
  • Try shooting against a solid colour wall; that way, you will have your viewers' total attention on you. White is always best.
  • Make sure that your face is in the light. People need to see you. You may need to add some lights to the room; they don’t have to be special video lights - they just have to turn on.
  • Don’t wear sunglasses or hide your eyes. You don’t have to look right at the camera, but you should try to make an honest connection with your potential donors.
Music Resources

SoundCloud, Vimeo Music Store, Free Music Archive, and ccMixter or find a musical friend who will supply something special.

Including Logos

Make sure that you have permission to include any logos or business / organizational reference you plan to use during your video. For example, as a rule of thumb, using still shots of logos for Major Games, or the Olympic Rings, are not permissible in Pursu.it campaign videos.

Uploading Your Video

Upload your video to: http://vimeo.com/athletepursuit. The format of your video must be 1000MB or less and have a file type of MOV, MPEG, MP4, WMV.

You can also upload to a video hosting site such as YouTube and insert the URL during your campaign set-up.

Creating Your Givebacks

Givebacks are used by you (the athlete) to thank your fans for their support. It is important to understand the value of a giveback, and how meaningful it will be to your potential Pursu.it campaign supporters.

When you are establishing and defining your givebacks, it is important to think about what your fans like about you – be authentic! If you love handwritten cards, then offer to write a personalized note; if you love painting, make a limited edition print. Be creative with your givebacks, but also be conscious of the time, effort, and cost of the givebacks you plan to deliver.

Giveback Ideas
  1. Something made with love: Knitted things, artwork, music, etc. Anything that connects the fan to you personally will go a long way!
  2. Messages: Postcards from the road, video blogs of your adventures, email updates – something to make your fans feel like they are a part of your Pursu.it. For a larger donation, you might consider an inspirational speech to a corporation or at an event.
  3. Sponsored items: Clothing, sunglasses, gifts of all kinds can be donated from your friends and sponsors and make great givebacks to help keep the money directed at your Pursu.it. If you want to up the ante, find a jersey from a team or competition and sign it for your fans to hang on their wall!
  4. Experiences: A day on the slopes, a lesson in the pool, biking through a wine region or even just a friendly jog in the park can all be priceless experiences for your fans. Be clever and couple what you do best with a wonderful experience and set a value to match.
Pricing Your Givebacks

Do not underestimate your givebacks – you inspire your fans with your ambition, dedication, and drive to be the best.

The most common donations are $100, $50 and $25, so make sure your givebacks accommodate these levels. Have some more expensive givebacks as well for people who’ll support you with higher amounts.

Team Campaigns

Pursu.it now has the ability to run campaigns for teams! As you're setting up your campaign, navigate to the 'Team' tab and check the box indicating you're managing a team.

For each player, upload a picture and enter their name and position. When supporters make their pledges, they will be prompted to direct that pledge toward a player of their choice. While this money all goes to the campaign, Pursu.it will track the amount brought in by each individual team member.

Want to foster competition within your team to drive fundraising? Try offering a prize to the player who raises the most money for the campaign. We can't wait to see what your star players can do.

Promoting Your Pursu.it Campaign

Support for your Pursu.it campaign can come from fans you have never connected with, but most will come from your own networks and your networks’ networks. If you want people to support your Pursu.it, you have to tell them about it, then tell them about it again, then again, then again, then again, and then again.

Pro tips

Diversify how you get your story out to the world - Email, Facebook, Twitter, speaking engagements, posters at your parents' and friends’ offices. Whatever it takes.

It’s best to craft a personal email message. Mass messages, even if crafted carefully, don’t hit the mark. Get out to those closest to you first: your parents, friends of your parents, your friends, your employer, your sponsors - whoever has already proven to be your fan.

Then encourage them to reach out to their networks with a personal message. It helps if you are willing to do the work and craft the message for them to send out.

Use the sports organizations who are committed to your success. Your club, provincial and national sport organizations, your Canadian Sport Center, your university, college - they have an interest in you because your success is their success.

Make sure you tell everyone about your Pursu.it. Go for coffee with anyone interested and don’t be afraid to bring a face to your online Pursu.it.

Finally, use the media. The press loves a great story about an athlete trying to reach their goals and make their community proud. Find someone who will listen and tell your story. If you are successful, direct them to your online Pursu.it where fans can donate.

Whatever you do, make it personal. Spam doesn’t do you any good and will not bring in fans! Keep it fun, keep it active and watch your Pursu.it succeed.

Updating Your Campaign

It is very useful to engage your supporters and fans by updating your progress during your Pursu.it campaign. You can share your progress, update fans on your training, and send along fun facts on your campaign in the “Updates”. Campaign updates can be daily or weekly, and will help continue to spread the word over the life of your campaign and help to raise more support. Remember, time is limited.

Some positive ideas for updates include sending pictures to fans, sharing a new personal best, or highlighting a great supporter, coach, or teammate. Fun and engaging content helps grow your fan base.

Celebrating Your Success

Share news, press, and photos from your life, training and competition. Your fans are a part of your team. Communicating with your fans can be one of the most rewarding parts of the process, and helps build your long-term support network.

Fulfilling Givebacks

It is recommended that givebacks be sent out no later than one month after a campaign ends. Givebacks are a very important piece of the Pursu.it campaign process, so give yourself adequate time to fulfill each required giveback. For many athletes, it is ideal to fulfill givebacks in an ongoing manner, so that the workload is more manageable. Regardless of approach, givebacks must be completed in a timely manner, and are an integral piece to solidifying your connection to supporters.

Overcoming Obstacles

Things happen, and unfortunately not every Pursu.it campaign will be without obstacles. Circumstances such as injuries or competition cancellation can substantially change your plans and need for funding. If your Pursu.it campaign requires a fundamental change in approach, it is important you communicate this news to your supporters and fans. Most people will be very understanding, but it is essential you keep your team aware of your circumstance, and the nature/plans for the use of funds of your Pursu.it campaign they have supported or plan to support.

Pursu.it Rewards

So you've launched your Pursu.it and you're ready to see the donations come in. Well, what if we said we wanted to sweeten the deal? Pursu.it is now offering rewards for milestones reached during your campaign. You'll earn cold, hard cash for raising money, having lots of contributors, and for creating engaging content to share with your fans. Neat, right? Take a look at the breakdowns below!

Want to keep earning money after your campaign closes? Refer a friend to Pursu.it!

We'll keep you up to date on their campaign, and when it ends, you get a percentage of the total amount raised. This comes out of Pursu.it's share, so your friend still brings home the same amount.

You'll earn 1% of the total amount raised, to a maximum of $100 per campaign.

There's no limit to the number of athletes you can refer! The more people you send our way, the more money you make.

Terms of Use

Welcome to Pursu.it!

This page explains our terms of use. When you use Pursu.it, you’re agreeing to the rules on this page – some of them are relevant to all users of the website, and some are only relevant to the Athletes that want to make an Account and start a Campaign. Nonetheless, all rules apply to all users. Some of them need to be expressed in legal language, but we’ve done our best to offer you clear and simple explanations of what everything means. You'll see summaries in a box like this – they are not part of the official legal terms.

For Everyone:

By using this website (the “Site”) and the services available through the Site (together with the Site, the “Services”) offered by Pursu.it (together with its parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, representatives, consultants, employees, officers, and directors — collectively, “Pursu.it,” “we,” or “us”), you’re agreeing to these legally binding rules (the “Terms”). You’re also agreeing to our privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) and agreeing to follow any other rules on the Site, like our campaign guidelines (“Pursu.it Playbook“).

We may change these Terms from time to time. If we do, we’ll let you know about any material changes by notifying you on the Site. If you keep using Pursu.it after a change, that means you accept the new Terms.

Pursu.it is for your personal, non-commercial use, except as explained below.

About Creating a Campaign
To sign up for a Pursu.it account and create a fundraising campaign, you need to be 18 or over, or have a parent or legal guardian’s consent and supervision. You’re responsible for your account and all the activity on it.

For Athletes:

You can browse Pursu.it without registering for an account (“Account”), but to create a fundraising campaign (“Campaign”) you’ll need to register, create an Account and set a password. When you do that, the information you give us has to be accurate and complete. Don’t impersonate anyone else or choose names that are offensive or that violate anyone’s rights. If you don’t follow these rules, we may cancel your Account.

You are responsible for all the activity on your Account, and for keeping your password confidential. If you find out that someone has used your Account without your permission, you should report it to lauren@pursu.it.

To sign up for an Account, you need to be at least 18 years old, or have the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian. We reserve the right to ask you for proof of age at any time, either before or after you have created an Account.

Things You Definitely Shouldn’t Do
This section is a list of things you likely know you shouldn’t do — lie, break laws, abuse people, steal, hack, and so forth. Please behave yourself. Don’t do this stuff.

The following is a list which includes, but is not limited to, things you are not to do while using the Services:

For everyone who uses the Services:

  • Don’t break the law. Don’t take any action that infringes or violates other people’s rights, violates the law, or breaches any contract or legal duty you have toward anyone.

  • Don’t victimize anyone. Don’t do anything threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, tortious, obscene, profane, or invasive of another person’s privacy.

  • Don’t harm anyone’s computer. Don’t distribute software viruses, or anything else (code, films, programs) designed to interfere with the proper function of any software, hardware, or equipment on the Site (whether it belongs to Pursu.it or another party).

  • Don’t hack. Don’t try to interfere with the proper workings of the Services. Don’t bypass any measures we’ve put in place to secure the Services. Don’t try to damage or attain unauthorized access to any system, data, password, or other information, whether it belongs to Pursu.it or another party. Don’t take apart or reverse engineer any aspect of Pursu.it in an effort to access things like source code, underlying ideas, or algorithms.

  • Don’t do things which diminish the Services for others. Don’t take any action that imposes an unreasonable load on our infrastructure, or on our third-party providers. (We reserve the right to determine what’s reasonable.) Don’t use any kind of software or device (whether it’s manual or automated) to “crawl” or “spider” any part of the Site.

For Athletes:

  • Don’t lie to people. Don’t post information you know is false, misleading, or inaccurate. Don’t do anything deceptive or fraudulent.

  • Don’t offer prohibited items. Don’t offer any Givebacks that are illegal, violate any of Pursu.it’s policies, rules, or guidelines, or violate any applicable law, statute, ordinance, or regulation.

  • Don’t abuse other users’ personal information. When you use Pursu.it — and especially if you create a successful Campaign — you may receive information about other users, including things like their names, email addresses, and postal addresses. This information is provided for the purpose of participating in a Campaign: don’t use it for other purposes, and don’t abuse it.

  • Don’t spam. Don’t distribute unsolicited or unauthorized advertising or promotional material, or any junk mail, spam, or chain letters. Don’t run mail lists, listservs, or any kind of auto-responder or spam on or through the Site.
How Campaigns Work
Most of our Terms of Use explain your relationship with Pursu.it. This section is different — it explains the relationship between Athletes and Supporters of Campaigns, and who’s responsible for what. This is what you’re agreeing to when you create or back a Campaign.

For Everyone

Pursu.it provides a funding platform for athlete and sport Campaigns. When an athlete (“Athlete”) posts a Campaign on Pursu.it, they are inviting other people to form a contract (“Contract”) with them and support their athletic financial needs. Anyone who backs a Campaign with financial support (a “Supporter”) is accepting the Athlete’s offer (the “Giveback”), and forming that Contract. Pursu.it is not a part of this Contract — the Contract is a direct legal agreement between Athletes and their Supporters. Here are the terms that govern the Contract:

  1. When a Pledge or donation to a Campaign has been made, (and a giveback has been requested), the Athlete must complete the Campaign obligations and fulfill each Giveback.

  2. Throughout the process, Athletes owe their Supporters a high standard of effort, honest communication, and a dedication to bringing the Campaign to life. At the same time, Supporters must understand that when they back a Campaign, they are helping to support athletic goals. There may be changes or delays, and there’s a chance something could happen that prevents the Athlete from being able to complete the Campaign as promised.

  3. The Athlete may need to send you questions about your Giveback. To deliver Givebacks, the Athlete might need information from you, like your mailing address or t-shirt size. To receive the Giveback, you will need to provide the information in a reasonable amount of time.

  4. The estimated delivery date is the Athlete’s estimate. The date listed on each Giveback is the Athlete’s estimate of when they will provide the Giveback — not a guarantee to fulfill by that date. The schedule may change as the Athlete works on the Campaign. We ask Athletes to think carefully, set a date they feel confident they can work toward, and communicate with Supporters about any changes.

  5. If an Athlete is struggling to complete their Campaign and fulfill Givebacks, they risk failing to live up to the basic obligations of the Contract. To right this, they must make every reasonable effort to find another way of bringing the Campaign to the best possible conclusion for Supporters. An Athlete in this position must:
    • post an update that explains what work / training / competition etc. has been done, how funds were used, and what prevents them from finishing the Campaign as planned;
    • work diligently and in good faith to bring the Campaign to the best possible conclusion in a timeframe that is communicated to Supporters;
    • demonstrate that they have used funds appropriately and made every reasonable effort to complete the Campaign as promised;
    • have been honest, and have made no material misrepresentations in their communication to Supporters; and
    • offer to return any remaining funds to Supporters who have not received their Giveback (in proportion to the amounts pledged), or else explain how those funds will be used to complete the Campaign in some alternate form.

  6. The Athlete is solely responsible for fulfilling the Givebacks offered in their Campaign. If they are unable to satisfy the terms of this Contract, they may be subject to legal action by Supporters.
How Funding Works
This section goes over the details of creating and backing Campaigns — things like how money gets collected, whether pledges can be changed or cancelled, and how Athletes can contact Supporters to provide Givebacks.

For Athletes:

These are the Terms that apply when you’re creating a Campaign:

  • You are not charged to set up your Pursu.it Campaign. There is no initial charge to submit a draft Campaign on Pursu.it for approval.
  • The cost of running a Campaign on Pursu.it is the percentage listed on the Site under the Pursu.it Playbook. Pursu.it reserves the right to adjust this amount from time to time but will not do so retroactively.

  • You can refund individual pledges if you want. During your Campaign, you can notify Pursu.it to cancel and refund a Supporter’s pledge at any time. If you do so, you have no further obligation to that specific Supporter, and no Contract exists between you and the Supporter.

  • We will charge our fees before putting funds into your account. Pursu.it and its payment partners will subtract fees before transmitting the proceeds of a Campaign. An explanation of our fees can be found on the About page of the Site.

  • Some pledges can’t be collected, which might reduce the amount of funding you get. We can’t guarantee that the amount of funding you receive will be exactly equal to the full amount pledged minus fees. If a payment can’t be collected for any reason — for instance, when a Supporter’s credit card expires before funding ends — then you will not receive the uncollected amount of the pledge.

  • Launching, collecting and spending may not occur instantly. Don’t assume you will be able to launch your Campaign when you want - there could be a reason we are not able to accept it, or a problem that takes time to resolve. Don’t assume you will be able to immediately collect your funding - there may be a delay between the end of a successful Campaign and your access to the funds. Don’t take any actions in reliance on collecting any of the money Supporters have committed until you actually have the ability to withdraw it from your account and spend it.

For Supporters:

These are the Terms that apply when you’re supporting a Campaign:

  • Payment will be processed immediately upon submission of a pledge.

  • Pursu.it takes a fee out of your pledged amount. A percentage of the pledged amount is retained by Pursu.it for this purpose of operating the platform and support services. Pursu.it’s fees are explained in the About section of the Site. Pursu.it reserves the right to adjust this amount from time to time but will not do so retroactively.

  • Pursu.it doesn’t offer refunds. Responsibility for finishing a Campaign lies entirely with the Campaign Athlete. Pursu.it doesn’t hold funds on Athletes’ behalf, cannot guarantee Athletes’ work, and does not offer refunds.
Stuff We Don’t Do and Aren’t Responsible For
We don’t oversee Campaigns’ performance, and we don’t mediate disputes between Athletes and Supporters.

For Everyone

Pursu.it isn’t liable for any damages or losses related to any Contract. We don’t become involved in disputes between Athletes and Supporters, or between Athletes, Supporters and any third party relating to the Contract. We don’t oversee the performance or punctuality of Campaigns, and we don’t endorse any content Athletes submit to the Site.

When you use the Services, you release Pursu.it from claims, damages, and demands of every kind — known or unknown, suspected or unsuspected, disclosed or undisclosed — arising out of or in any way related to such disputes and the Services. All content you access through the Services is at your own risk. You are solely responsible for any resulting damage or loss to any party.

Our Fees
There are fees associated with running a campaign on Pursu.it.

For Everyone

Creating an Account on Pursu.it is free. The fees of running a Campaign are listed on our Site under the Pursu.it Playbook page. If our fees ever change, we’ll announce that on our Site.

Some funds pledged by Supporters are collected by payment providers (such as Stripe). Each payment provider is its own company, and may charge its own fees above what Pursu.it charges to run the Campaign.

The Supporter is responsible for paying any additional fees or taxes associated with their use of Pursu.it. This includes, but is not limited to, fees related to the delivery of Givebacks and additional banking charges you incur in supporting a Campaign.

Other Websites
If you follow a link to another website, what happens there is between you and them — not us.

For Everyone

Pursu.it may contain links to other websites. (For instance, Campaign pages, user profiles, and payment processing sites.) When you access third-party websites, you do so at your own risk. We don’t control or endorse those sites. If you use the services on another site, such as a payment processor, you are also agreeing to that site’s terms of service.

Your Intellectual Property
We don’t own the stuff you post on Pursu.it. But when you post it, you’re giving us permission to use or copy it however we need in order to run the Site, or show people what’s happening on it. (We generally just use this to promote Campaigns and showcase our community on the Site.) You’re responsible for the content you post, and you’re vouching to us that it’s all okay to use.

For Athletes

Pursu.it doesn’t own content you submit to us (“Your Content”). But we do need certain licenses from you in order to perform our Services. When you submit a Campaign for review, or launch a Campaign, you agree to these Terms:

  • We can use Your Content. You grant to us, and others acting on our behalf, the worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable, transferable right to use, exercise, commercialize, and exploit the copyright, publicity, trademark, and database rights with respect to Your Content.

  • When we use Your Content, we can make changes, like editing or translating it. You grant us the right to edit, modify, reformat, excerpt, delete, or translate any of Your Content.

  • You won’t submit stuff you don’t hold the copyright for (unless you have permission). Your Content will not contain third-party copyrighted material, or material that is subject to other third-party proprietary rights, unless you have permission from the rightful owner of the material, or you are otherwise legally entitled to post the material (and to grant Pursu.it all the license rights outlined here).

  • Any royalties or licensing on Your Content are your responsibility. You will pay all royalties and other amounts owed to any person or entity based on Your Content, or on Pursu.it’s hosting of Your Content.

  • You promise that if we use Your Content, we’re not violating anyone’s rights or copyrights. If Pursu.it or its users exploit or make use of Your Content in the ways contemplated in this agreement, you promise that this will not infringe or violate the rights of any third party, including (without limitation) any privacy rights, publicity rights, copyrights, contract rights, or any other intellectual property or proprietary rights.

  • You’re responsible for the stuff you post. All information submitted to the Site, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted, is the sole responsibility of the person from whom Your Content originated.

  • We’re not responsible for mistakes in Your Content. Pursu.it will not be liable for any errors or omissions in any of Your Content.
Pursu.it’s Intellectual Property
The content on Pursu.it is protected in various ways. You do have the right to use it for certain personal purposes, but you can’t use it for anything commercial without getting permission first.

For Everyone

Pursu.it’s Services are legally protected in various ways, including copyrights, trademarks, service marks, patents, trade secrets, and other rights and laws. You agree to respect all copyright and other legal notices, information, and restrictions contained in the Content that we provide through the Services we offer (“Our Content”). You also agree not to change, translate, or otherwise create derivative works of Our Content.

Pursu.it grants you a license to reproduce Our Content from the Services for personal use only. This license covers both Our Content and user-generated content on the Site (all together, the “Content”). (This license is worldwide, non-exclusive, non-sublicensable, and non-transferable.) If you want to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, or store any of the Content for a commercial purpose, you need prior written permission from Pursu.it or the relevant copyright holder. A “commercial purpose” means you intend to use, sell, license, rent, or otherwise exploit Content for commercial use, in any way.

How We Deal with Copyright Issues
We comply with the Copyright Act.

For Everyone

The Copyright Act, RSC 1985, c C-42 lays out a system of legal requirements for dealing with allegations of copyright infringement. Pursu.it complies with the Copyright Act, and we respond to notices of alleged infringement if they comply with the law. We reserve the right to delete or disable content alleged to be infringing, and to terminate accounts for repeat infringers. We do this when appropriate and at our sole discretion.

Terminating your Account
You can delete your Account at any time. Deleting your Account won’t make Your Content that you’ve already posted go away.

For Athletes

You can terminate your Account and/or Campaign at any time. All provisions of this agreement survive termination of an Account, including our rights regarding any of Your Content. We will do our best to remove your Campaign from the Site in a timely fashion (at our sole discretion).

In the event that an Account is terminated, the Athlete remains contractually obligated to complete their Givebacks pursuant to their Contracts in accordance with the provisions contained in the “How Campaigns Work” section of these Terms.

Our Rights
To operate, we need to be able to maintain control over what happens on our Site. So in this section, we reserve the right to make decisions to protect the health and integrity of our system. We don’t take these powers lightly, and we only use them when we absolutely have to.

For Everyone

Pursu.it reserves the following rights:

  • We can make changes to the Services without notice or liability.

  • We have the right to decide who’s eligible to use Pursu.it. We can cancel Accounts or decline to offer our Services at our sole discretion and for any reason. We can change our eligibility criteria at any time. If these things are prohibited by law where you live, then we revoke your right to use Pursu.it in that jurisdiction.

  • We have the right to cancel any pledge to any Campaign, at any time and for any reason.

  • We have the right to reject, cancel, interrupt, remove, or suspend any Campaign at any time and for any reason.

Pursu.it is not liable for any damages as a result of any of these actions, and it is our policy not to comment on the reasons for any such action.

Privacy Policy

We always want our policies to be clear and easy to understand — so this Privacy Policy offers a simple breakdown of what happens with your data on Pursu.it, including which details are public, which are private, and which are shared only with the Athletes whose Campaigns you're supporting.
We're always open to feedback, so if you have any thoughts, get in touch by emailing Lauren at lauren@pursu.it.
What We Collect

In order for you to create an Account on Pursu.it or otherwise use the Service, we may need to collect and process some information. Depending on your use of the Service, that may include:

  • information that you provide by completing forms on the Site (such as your name, email and postal addresses, telephone number, country of residence and payment information);

  • your login and password details, in connection with the Account sign-in process;

  • details of any Campaign you launch through the Service; details of any pledge you make to a Campaign;

  • information about your activity on and interaction with the Site and Services, such as your IP address and the device or browser you use;

  • communications you send to us (for example, when you ask for support, send us questions or comments, or report a problem); and

  • information that you submit to the Site in the form of comments, contributions to discussions, or messages to other users.
What's Private

This data will not be publicly displayed or revealed to other users:

  • any payment information you provide

  • your password details

  • your IP address

  • your phone number

  • communications you send to us (for example, when you ask for support, send us questions or comments, or report a problem)

We don’t give your personal information to any third-party services, except when it’s necessary to provide Pursu.it’s Service (like when we partner with payment processors).

We do reserve the right to disclose personal information when we believe that doing so is reasonably necessary to comply with the law or law enforcement, to prevent fraud or abuse, or to protect Pursu.it’s legal rights.

What's Only Shared with Athletes

When you back an Athlete’s Campaign, the Athlete will know the email address associated with your Account, your name, the amount you have pledged, your mailing address, and the Giveback you have selected. Athletes will never receive Supporters’ credit card details or other payment information.

If you have supported an Athlete through his or her Campaign, that Athlete will receive the email address associated with your Account. The Athlete may send you a survey requesting information needed to provide your Giveback. (For instance, they may need your mailing address, or T-shirt size.) Any information you provide in such surveys will be received by the Athlete.

What's Public

As an Athlete, when you create an Account, we create a basic profile page for you on Pursu.it, containing your name, and the Campaign name. Whenever your Account name appears on the Site, people can click your Account name to see your profile. The profile is not searchable on Pursu.it or via search engines like Google. Here are some of the things that will be publicly viewable on your profile, or elsewhere on the site:

  • your name, and the date your Account was created;

  • any information you choose to add to your profile (like a picture, bio, or your location);

  • Campaigns you've launched; and

  • any comments you’ve posted on the Site;

As a Supporter of a Campaign, you may choose to leave a comment for the Athlete. These comments are public. If you don’t want others to see your name in the comments section of a Campaign, choose to have your support remain anonymous.

We will use the personal information you provide to:

  • identify you when you sign in to your Account;
