Franken-missy has arrived. Doctors visit to remove the dressing and do week one check-up. Now wait another two weeks. Re-molded my cast on the wrist. MRI this week to figure what the h e double hockey sticks is going on. Bruises are starting to show up in the most random places. Concussion symptoms come and go. Easy spin on the Wattbike yesterday showed its a little too soon.
Today I saw the wrist/hand specialist who was able to reset my dislocated ulna bone. It was another day of passing out, throwing up and dry heaving from the site of a three inch needle being pressed into my arm, and everything else that came with that. The good news is there was no damage to my elbow, and I'll be in a removable cast/splint progressively over the next 6 weeks while the ligaments and tendons take time to repair the connections in my joint.
During this time I will be taking full advantage of all jazzy chair opportunities, and today we started at Costco!
I can now focus on recovering, with my next visit to address my collarbone next week. Thank you again for all the messages. I can't wait to get back on my bike.
This morning Andy and I went to the ER. I've been having the worst headaches and building pressure since surgery. I decided to wait until this morning instead of going in last night to see if it might release, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Turns out I did in fact also receive a concussion in this crash. Luckily the CT scan did not show any bleeding or bad swelling, and like everything else I will make a full recovery in time.
After 6 hours we returned home for me to find the fridge full of food, the dogs taken care of, and the sweetest notes and cards. I'm so blown away. I don't even know what to say. The generosity of those surrounding me is incredible, and I couldn't be more humbled...
Tomorrow I meet with the hand specialist to discuss my options looking at the dislocation and fracture to my left wrist/arm. I will keep you updated as promised, and I'm still working on responding to all the messages. From the bottom of my heart... ❤
Today the sun was shining, I woke up with Eva's beautiful face looking back at mine, and I was home.
First off I want to thank everyone for their messages, emails, texts, and comments. I haven't been able to respond to a great majority of them but hoping to within the coming days. I want to thank you for sharing my fundraising link, I'm really humbled and blown away by the number of amazing and supportive people. Andy has been absolutely incredible. I don't know what I would do without him. Today the US sprint team left for Germany, and I would lie if I said this hasn't been a hard day.
It is hard to see any positives in this situation, but I am thankful for the support from USA Cycling, United States Olympic Committee, and all those who are part of my team. We will be putting the puzzle back together in the next few days/weeks.
Here are a few photos, and I apologize but I do not feel comfortable posting regarding the crash. But, finding a little humor today, I wanted to show Andy's creative side in giving me a "beiber" hairdo in my gorgeous hospital gown smile emoticon
Please keep sharing the link as you have done so amazingly. I have follow up with doctors early next week to address the next steps forward.
Thank you so much for everything.
Hi everyone. I'm finally home from the hospital. Naturally I made Andy bring me to the track so I could see my bike. Here's the scoop....broken saddle, seat topper, cracked top tube and rear triangle. Smashed IO and punctured/cracked disc. Not to mention my helmet.
I don't know where I'll go from here, but step one is paying for my medical expenses and healing. Cycling has to take a back seat, and seeing as I have zero equipment to ride on, that's not going to be very hard.
Thanks for all the kind words. If you would like to help donate to get me back on my feet again, you know where to go.
Yesterday (5/10), I was involved in a training accident on the track. I was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where the doctors explained I had a dislocation and fracture to my wrist, and I had broken my collarbone into three pieces pretty violently. I underwent surgery last night with a 6 week estimated heal period. The doctors held me overnight for monitoring. Although I did hit my head fairly hard, there seems to be no signs of concussion or damage.
Not only is my body in disarray, but my equipment. From what I am told I have thousands of dollars to replace between the frame and wheels and whatever else. My heart breaks knowing this, as paying for my medical expenses alone is something I haven't been able to wrap my head around. Please know that all donations to my fundraising page are now being directed towards my medical expenses.
Thank you to everyone who rushed to my and Andy's side yesterday to pack all my things while I was on the board, and for helping care for the dogs while we spent all day at the hospital. Through my tears of realizing something was terribly wrong, realizing I wouldn't be going to Germany, and fighting through the pain of it all, I didn't see all your faces but I heard your voices. And I know just how blessed I am to know each one of you.
I thank god I am alive. And the moment I'm able to get back on my bike and get right back to kicking the shit out of the boys, I will be. There's no one in the world more heartbroken than me, but it will all be ok. Thank you for your support and kind wishes.
