BMX wasn’t always my passion. I only picked up a bike at the age of 15. I was actually a gymnast from the age of 3-15. I tried many sports throughout high school but I always loved the individualism of BMX.
I picked up the basic skills for BMX fairly quick. Some would say I was a natural but my brother says it was just his coaching. After being on a bike for one season I qualified to become a member of Team Ontario. The following year I was off to Adelaide Australia for my first World Championships as a junior elite with the National Team.
Since I've moved to BC, I have made the effort to try and give back to the sport. I am a club coach at one of the local tracks, Ridge Meadows. Every Monday night, along side 2 of my teammates, I help coach either Learn to Ride clinics for beginners or Intermediate/Expert clinics for the more experienced riders. It is an awesome opportunity to get to know the local kids and families as well help them with their skills. This year I have started offering Private Coaching for the ladies. There are quite a few girls in the sport in BC and I want to help them excel to their potential.
I am now a member of the Canadian National BMX team living and training full time in Vancouver BC. In two weeks’ time I will be competing at the World Championships in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. This season didn’t start off the way I would have liked due to sickness but now I feel stronger then ever. I am looking forward to the opportunity to prove that to everyone. I have attended all the World Cups this season and I feel my skills and race knowledge are improving every race. I believe that the World Champs will be my time to shine and I believe in myself. I hope you do too.
Due to this year being the beginning of the Olympic Qualifying Calendar it is important that I attend as many races as possible. Although it might look like all fun and games, it isn’t a free ride to these races and finding the funds to cover my season is proving to be a significant challenge. For Worlds I am looking to cover my flight, project fee and food which come to a total of $3000.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Hope you come along for the ride.

Amelia, I have never met you, but work with your Dad. Your story is extraordinary, both in terms of the success you have enjoyed given your late arrival in BMX, and your recovery from this terrible disease. Your courage and commitment are a credit to you and your family. Good luck with your future, BMX and everything else you end up doing.
