My name is Megan Farrell and I am 25 years old. I have been snowboarding since I was four and started competing at six. I have been a member of the Canadian Snowboard Team for the past three years.
My long-term goal is to compete, and podium, at the Olympics. For the past three seasons, I have been the top or second place finisher in the overall North American Cup. Due to high results, I have pre- qualified for all of the FIS World Cup starts this season. This is the path to the 2018 Olympics.
My career in Canada began at the age of 16 when I was eligible for my first Canadian National race. By 17, I was the only Canadian woman selected to compete in Junior World Championships. In my final year of high school, I won two gold medals at North America races (NorAm circuit) and won third place for the overall NorAm Cup. At Canadian Nationals that year, I placed second overall for women and was the youngest female to be selected on the national team for alpine snowboarding.
After competing for a year full-time, I decided to go back to school and get a degree in Environmental Studies. I graduated in four years with Honours from Queen’s University, all while balancing snowboarding. In my final year of university, I won Canadian Nationals and claimed the overall title in the NorAm circuit despite having to miss a majority of the races due to school. Having achieved my academic goal, I have been focusing 100% on snowboarding.
While I am honoured to represent Canada, snowboarding is a very costly sport. This year, despite making the criteria for funding, there was a drastic decrease in the federal budget. I now receive zero funding from Canada for the Olympic season. The National Team program includes training camps and races around the globe. I am required to spend several months in Europe, and travel to Bulgaria and Korea. This summer, I also had a month long training camp in Chile.
With my busy training and racing schedule, I have taken the summer off of work to focus on snowboarding full-time. My parents have been my biggest supporters and provide room, board, and access to a vehicle to drive to NorAm events, my job, or the gym when I am in Canada. I really rely on my sponsors to help pay for my expenses. My goal is to medal at the Olympics.
Thank you for your time and consideration in helping me towards the 2018 Olympics! I can’t do it alone!
