My name is Dylan Saffery. Some of you may know me from last year, some of you may not so, either way, here's a little bit about myself...
I'm from Guelph ON, home of the Guelph Grotto rock climbing gym. I have been climbing since I was eight years old. I competed on the National stage for the first time in the early months of 2015, and then, on an international stage for the first time later that summer in Arco, Italy. I like art and reading, spending time with friends and, above all, I just like to do the things that make me happy.
Now, last year I received tremendous support for my trip to Italy. It was my first time competing at that level -- Youth World Championships -- and as can be expected there were a few hiccups. I didn't place as well as I would've liked yet it was still an amazing learning experience. I took that learning and applied to the 2015/16 season and now over a year later I'm poised to return to the world stage: this time in Guangzhou, China.
It wasn't all as simple as it sounds however. I was set to go back to Worlds in the same discipline as last year, Bouldering, but one bad day at semifinals of Nationals and that went down the drain... It was ok though, I had a second chance in the Lead/Difficulty discipline. So off to Canmore, Alberta I went and there, after an amazing competition I emerged 2nd in the youth A (U17) Category, regaining my place on the Canadian National Team.
Since then, I have trained purely lead climbing, which is much more endurance focused than bouldering, and I'm ready to represent Canada well. I leave for China on November 2nd, 2016 and I return on the 12th. 10 days where anything can happen. I need your help to get there. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help me. China is far away, planes aren't cheap and neither is training. I'm asking for your support!
Please help me pursue my dream! It means the world to me.
Thank you so much!
