From a young age, I was always an active kid. It didn't matter what I was doing - as long as I was moving, I was happy. My track and field journey began at Regina Mundi Catholic College right here in London, where I competed in a number of different events. After a rocky first few years, I gradually became more and more successful, and eventually became the top-ranked junior in Canada. In 2010, I won my first international medal in long jump at the World Junior Championships. That was when I knew I could be a world class athlete.
I eventually became Canada's top ranked senior long jumper. I enrolled at Western University and while representing the Mustangs I won 2 Canadian University gold medals in long jump and was twice named the Western track and field athlete of the year. Despite my success, last year I made the decision to begin training full time so that I could devote myself 100% to reaching my athletic goals.
Like any good story, my journey has not been without hardships and sacrifices. Last year, I sustained a serious injury to my ankle that resulted in surgery. This prevented me from competing at my best last year and ultimately left me unfunded by my national sport governing body. Additionally, I decided to make the switch from focusing on long jump to focusing on the decathlon - a grueling 2 day, 10 event competition in track and field.
Because a lot of the decathlon events are outdoor specific, my current indoor training facility is very limiting. I can't wait for the warm weather to roll around to begin the training that I need. Because of this, I must travel to warmer training camps to practice my events. This unfortunately does not come cheap. On top of training 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, I have had to work 2 jobs to cover my training and competition costs. I have always had tremendous support from my mother who is a single parent, but the high level training that I need simply cannot happen without help from you guys
